Good evening! Welcome to Knitting with Liz!
This week instead of a pattern, I'm sharing a basic method to make shapes and patterns. I chose to make a heart (as seen below!) with some smaller yarn used previously to make a baby blanket.
I started with the image below:
The image above was a perfect base to develop the pattern because it represented the heart in smaller squares. I could translate each square into a knit stitch or purl stitch as needed and get the shape I was looking for.
The stockinette stitch is made of rows alternating between knit and purl. This stitch is perfect for this sort of pattern because it makes a right side and wrong side, but both sides have a finished look. You end up having one side with a knit background and the other with a purl background.
Once I had an image to base my pattern on, I used makeshift graph paper to draw my pattern and write out what stitches were needed for each row. My chart here:
As you can see I wrote the following:
(IMPORTANT... DO NOT FOLLOW THE PATTERN BELOW... READ ON FOR FULL PATTERN)
Row 1-7: K30
Row 8: K14, P1, K15
Row 9: K13, P3, K14
Row 10: K12, P5, K13
Row 11: K11, P7, K12
Row 12: K10, P9, K11
Row 13: K9, P11, K10
Row 14: K8, P13, K9
Row 15: K7, P15, K8
Row 16: K6, P17, K7
Rows 17-21: K5, P19, K6
Row 22: K5, P9, K1, P9, K6
Row 23: K6, P7, K3, P7, K7
Row 24: K7, P5, K5, P5, K8
Rows 25-30: K30
This pattern, however, is intended to be knit on flat needles. This means that every other row must be flipped to achieve the desired result.
So... If you would like to knit a small square and heart, here is the pattern below!
